Ⅰ. Introduction of SBS

Shanghai Business School (SBS), formerly known as the East China Branch of the Tax Administration School of the Central Government (founded in 1950), is a public application-oriented undergraduate institution of higher education with a distinctive focus on business studies. The school fully implements the national educational policy and remains true to the original aspiration of cultivating talents for the party and the country. The school has adhered to a “business-rooted and application-centered” education philosophy, and upheld the school motto of “strive for virtue and erudition, devote to economic prosperity and social responsibility”. The school is devoted to developing “applied, innovative, and international” school-running features, cultivating high-quality application-oriented business talents with professional attainment, practical ability, innovative spirit, international view, and a strong sense of social responsibility, and building a high-level application-oriented business school. In October 2021, with the approval of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, the school was approved as a master's degree-granting unit, achieving a major breakthrough in school-running level.

Currently the school has three campuses (Fengpu Campus, Xuhui Campus, and Guoquan Road Campus) and one school point at Fuzhou Road, and boasts nearly 8,000 full-time students. Currently, the school has a total of 787 teaching and administrative staff members, including one expert enjoying special government subsidy from the State Council, two teachers elected as members of the Ministry of Education's Steering Committee on Higher Educational Institutions, one “Leading Talent in Shanghai”, and ten winners of the Shanghai Municipal-level Outstanding Teacher Award and the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award. In the past five years, SBS has also won a total of 8 first and second prizes of the municipal teaching achievement award, and offered over 60 municipal-level key, top-quality, and model courses. It has offered 30 regular undergraduate specialties for 2021. To be specific, its business administration, hospitality management, e-commerce, international economics and trade, logistics management are national-level first-class undergraduate specialties; its finance, computer science and technology, marketing, business economics, food quality and safety, information management and information system, accounting, and tourism management are Shanghai municipal-level first-class undergraduate specialties; its taxation and eight other specialties are application-oriented undergraduate experimental specialties in institutions of higher learning under Shanghai municipality; its business administration, hospitality management, e-commerce, and marketing have passed ACBSP international certification, realizing the full coverage of new liberal arts, engineering and agricultural projects of the Ministry of Education. For the past five years, the students of SBS have won more than 1,100 national awards in the National Selection Competition for the WorldSkills Competition, the “Challenge Cup”, and many other disciplinary (specialty) competitions. Moreover, SBS has a stable graduate employment rate of above 96%.

By continuously deepening the connotations of discipline construction, the school aims to accelerate disciplinary special zone construction and create a business discipline system based on applied economics and business administration and characterized by interdisciplinary coordinated development. Its applied economics is a class-II plateau discipline at Shanghai municipal level; and its business administration has been included under Shanghai Higher Education Institutions First-Class Discipline (Class B) Construction Program. So far, the school has two master's degree authorization points in tourism management and international business. Over the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 70 scientific research projects at or above the provincial or ministerial level (subsidized by the National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Science Fund, and so forth), and won 10 provincial or ministerial-level scientific research awards, including Shanghai Municipality Research Achievements Award for Decision-making Consultation.

Focusing on national and local strategic demands and major industrial demands, the school has deepened its comprehensive strategic cooperation with Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, and launched a series of commercial (business) application research and consultation services. It has also developed multiple municipal-level scientific research bases and platforms, such as Shanghai Institute of Commercial Development, University Think Tank of Shanghai, Shanghai Social Science Innovative Research Base, Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities of Shanghai, and University Knowledge Service Platform of Shanghai. It has also received replies from provincial and ministerial leaders concerning over 70 research achievements for business decision-making consultation in the past five years. The MOFCOM Training Base for International Business Officials (Shanghai), established by the Ministry of Commerce at SBS, has offered training to a cumulative total of 5,700 business officials from more than 100 countries (regions) worldwide.

Clinging to the principle of open schooling, the school never ceases to enhance its international reputation and influence. For the purpose of introducing high-quality business education resources, it has jointly set up the College of Shanghai Lausanne Hospitality Management (officially approved by the Ministry of Education in May 2021) with EHL, making a substantial breakthrough in Sino-foreign cooperative school running. It has successively launched cooperation and exchanges with nearly 90 research institutions and institutions of higher learning in the US, the UK, Australia, and many other countries and regions, initiated the founding of the “Belt and Road” International Business Education Alliance, led the formation of the International Alliance of High-end Business Think Tanks, and established its Overseas Education Base in Central and Eastern Europe.

The school lays emphasis on the inheritance of traditional commercial culture and the cultivation of the core socialist values. It has built Chinese Commercial Culture Exhibition Hall and Shanghai-style Commercial Culture Research Institute, and produced a range of business culture-themed feature films, such as Centennial History of Commerce in Shanghai, Centennial History of Retails, and Centennial History of Trade. The school has also undertaken the interview and selection activities of the Chinese Poetry Competition (Seasons II and III) in Shanghai. In addition, the school has received many honors, including the “Silver Prize of the 2nd Chinese Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition” sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, “National Defense Education Characteristic School Elected by the Ministry of Education”, “2019 Excellent Organization Award of Chinese Classics Recitation, Writing, and Speaking Contest Sponsored by the Ministry of Education”, and the “1st Civilized Campus in Shanghai”.

The school has exerted itself to create a smart campus, developed multiple smart applications based on “banking service system” and other service modes and mindsets, and taken the lead in logistics information technology construction and services. The major honors it has won include “Excellent Demonstration Unit for Logistics Information Technology Construction at Institutions of Higher Learning Nationwide”, “Award for Top 10 Innovative Applications in Smart City Construction of Shanghai”, and “Bench-marking School for Education Information Technology Applications in Shanghai”.

Standing at a new historical starting point, the school will fully integrate into the national strategy of the new era and the construction of "Five Centers" and "Four Brands" of Shanghai, deepen the connotation of international cooperation in running schools, and effectively strengthen the collaborative innovation of business education in the “Belt and Road Initiative”, striving to turn SBS into a high-level application-oriented business school with distinctive characteristics.

 

Ⅱ. Introduction of College of International Education

The College of International Education of Shanghai Business School is a functional department responsible for the enrollment and management of international students in China, and a teaching unit directly managed under SBS. It mainly undertakes the teaching and research of Chinese language and Chinese culture courses for international students in China. The college first started to enroll international students in 2007, and so far it has enrolled international students from more than 70 countries and regions, including the US, Germany, Russia, Australia, the Netherlands, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, and South Korea. Over the past few years, the college has gradually enlarged its scale of international students, and increasingly enriched its teaching forms. The college actively develops all-English specialties and courses, and energetically improves the quality of international student training, aiming to create a richly layered international student training system.

The MOFCOM Training Base for International Business Officials (Shanghai) (hereinafter referred to as Shanghai Training Base) is one of the first batch of four training bases for international business officials in China, and also the only training base for international business officials in the Yangtze River Delta region. With the merger of Shanghai Business Education & Training Center as a whole into SBS in 2016, Shanghai Training Base was incorporated into SBS as well.

In January 2021, the College of International Education and the Shanghai Training Base were co-located for the convenience of handling official affairs jointly. The purpose was to improve the quality and efficiency of international student education through integrating the high-quality resources of the two institutions.

The college is composed of four departments, i.e., the Administration Office, the Logistics Department of the Base, the Project Department of the Shanghai Training Base, and the Office of International Student Affairs. Currently it has a total of 19 teaching and administrative staff members, including three with a senior professional title and 15 with a Master degree. The staff team is young and 14 of them are below 40 years old.

The college attaches great importance to the education of international students and the training of international business officials. By actively serving national strategies and vigorously developing a professional, branded, and international training base for international business officials, the college aims to train outstanding messengers of cultural exchanges, build a bridge of friendship between China and foreign countries, and contribute to the building of SBS into a high-level, application-oriented, innovative, and international business school.

Colleges Recruiting International Students

1. College of Hospitality Management

Upholding the education philosophy of “rooting in business, basing in Shanghai, serving the nation, and opening up to the whole world”, the college adopts the education orientation of cultivating “internationalized, application-oriented, and interdisciplinary” talents, and develops an interdisciplinary pattern based on the three specialties of hospitality management, tourism management, and food quality and safety, aiming to improve the traditional commercial (business) service industry. The school offers three undergraduate specialties (hospitality management, tourism management, and food quality and safety), which are inter-correlated with their respective features. In 2012, the fourth undergraduate education highland construction project in Shanghai, Practical Exploration of an International Talent Cultivation Model for the Specialty of Hospitality Management, successfully passed the acceptance by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Since 2013, the specialty of hospitality management has been included among the first batch of “Undergraduate Teaching Project” comprehensive reform experimental specialties at local institutions of higher learning under the Ministry of Education, and rated as an “Undergraduate Teaching Project” college student off-campus practice & education base at local institutions of higher learning under the Ministry of Education. In 2015, it was included in the first batch of application-oriented undergraduate experimental specialties in institutions of higher learning under Shanghai municipality. In 2018, it was included among the first batch of specialties under the first-class undergraduate specialty construction leading program at institutions of higher learning under Shanghai municipality. In 2019, it passed ACBSP international certification, and was included among the first batch of “national-level first-class undergraduate specialties” under the Ministry of Education. In 2020, it passed academic certification by EHL. The specialty of tourism management was rated in 2017 as an application-oriented undergraduate experimental specialty in institutions of higher learning under Shanghai municipality. The specialty of food quality and safety was rated in 2018 as an application-oriented undergraduate experimental specialty in institutions of higher learning under Shanghai municipality. In 2021, the Master degree program for the specialty of tourism management was granted (research direction: hotel operations and management, and regional tourism development and management).

The college has a vibrant, experienced, and well-structured teaching staff with international view and high academic level and professional titles. Currently, the college has a total of 56 teaching and administrative staff members, including six teachers with senior professional titles, 14 teachers with sub-senior professional titles, full-time teachers with a doctoral degree or above (80%), members of the Ministry of Education's Steering Committee on Tourism Management Specialties at Higher Educational Institutions, local talents elected into the “Thousand Talents Programme”, and local leading talents. The teachers of the college have all achieved high academic levels and accumulated rich teaching experience in their respective areas of expertise. Most of them also have rich experience working at enterprises, and have obtained the certificates of Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) and Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT) issued by American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), as well as other senior professional qualification certificates such as European Coffee Taster Certificate and Registered Dietitian Certificate. The college has two research institutions, namely, Real Estate Finance & Big Data Research Center and Starwood Hotel Management Research Center. In recent years, it has undertaken multiple projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

For the purpose of “offering all-round quality services for students”, the college takes an employment-oriented approach, and is dedicated to cultivating high-end culture, tourism, business, and trade talents with professional attainment, practical ability, innovative spirit, international view, and a strong sense of social responsibility. The college has topped the list of colleges and universities in Shanghai for years in terms of employment rate, and stayed ahead in the postgraduate examination in terms of both passing rate and admission rate.

The college has access to abundant teaching resources, and is one of the first batch of “Undergraduate Teaching Project” college student management science practice & teaching bases, an intensified training base in China for the Hotel Reception Project of the 45th WorldSkills Competition, and an intensified training base in Shanghai for the Hotel Reception Project of the 46th WorldSkills Competition. In addition, the college has built 18 on-campus laboratories, four joint practice & teaching centers, and 69 off-campus internship bases, and engaged in joint talent cultivation with many hotel groups (such as Marriott, ACCOR Hotels, InterContinental Hotel Group, Hengshan and JINMAO) and Bright Dairy and other enterprises. Its aim is to build a first-class, world-renowned college of hospitality management based on industry-teaching integration and characterized by “the collaboration among enterprises, universities, research institutes, and users”.

(1) Tourism Management (Postgraduate, Availability of Language for Instruction: Chinese)

Training goals

The specialty is dedicated to cultivating application-oriented talents with practical ability, innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, international view, and a strong sense of social responsibility, who understand Chinas politics, economy, culture, and society and are capable of communicating in Chinese. Upon possessing solid theoretical literacy and practical ability and mastering professional knowledge and skills in tourism management, students will be able to focus on tourism and hotel industry, tourism destinations and exhibition industries, as well as tourism e-commerce, tourism real estate, tourism finance, tourism health care, and other emerging tourism industries and sectors, and be qualified to engage in technical work such as resource development and planning, tourism investment and big data analysis.

Job orientations

1. Operations and management posts at international brand hotels and modern high-end leisure resorts, home-stays, and clubs, including their departments of human resources, marketing, financial, revenue management, and dining management;

2. Hospitality-related investment development and consulting industries, such as tourist hospitality consulting and management, e-commerce, and health industry consulting management companies;

3. High-end service, exhibition, luxury goods, and other related industries;

4. Government agencies and industry associations.

Specialty features

The SBS program unit for Master of Tourism Management (MTA) officially approved and established in 2021 has a state-level first-class unit for undergraduate professional construction (Hospitality Management, and Business Administration), a Shanghai plateau discipline (Business Administration for the Orientation of Tourism Management), Shanghai pilot programs for applied undergraduate education (Tourism Management, and Hospitality Management), various teaching and S&T supporting platforms (including a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, an off-campus practice education base for college and university students of the Ministry of Education, a nationally-led training base of the Hotel Reception Program for the World Skills Competition, a humanities and social science research base for Shanghai universities, the think tank of Shanghai universities, the secretariat of the Special Committee of Shanghai Tourism Standardization Technical Committee and others). There are 18 on-campus laboratories and 4 joint practice teaching centers of enterprises. Besides, the unit has carried out talent training jointly with hotel groups (including Marriott, Accor, Intercontinental, Donghu, JINMAO and others) as well as various enterprises (such as CYTS, Ctrip, LvMama, Disney, and CITS International Convention and Exhibition Co., Ltd.), and established more than 60 industry-teaching-research integrated practice bases. By the end of 2021, the College has deeply cooperated with world-renowned schools such as EHL Hospitality Business School (Switzerland), the University of Northampton (the UK), the Northern Arizona University (the USA), the University of Oklahoma (the USA), the University of South Carolina (the USA), and the Budapest Business School (Hungary) in mutual visits of teachers and students, academic exchanges, lectures, cooperative construction of courses, and joint training of undergraduates, achieving staged remarkable results and breakthroughs in the process of building a domestic first-class and world-renowned college of Hospitality Management that integrates industry and education.

The MTA faculty is composed of full-time teachers and industry experts. The unit has established a reasonably-structured quality and promising young teacher team with innovation and cooperation spirits, including 42 full-time teachers (50% with senior professional titles and 80% with a doctoral degree). The faculty is characterized by the advantages of high-level applied research, rich practical experience and prominent social service capabilities. The discipline team includes scholars of the Thousand Talents Program, members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, winners of Shanghai Famous Teachers, leaders of the coaching team for the World Skills Competition, Director of the Foreign Tourism Department, and heads of well-known hotels. They have been responsible for more than 50 provincial-, ministerial-level and higher-level scientific research projects (including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Foundation of China, the Humanities and Social Sciences Project of the Ministry of Education, and the scientific research projects of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism), published high-level papers in top domestic and international journals, presided over the compilation of multiple hotel and tourism-related industry standards, local standards and group standards, and have several decision consulting results approved by domestic and foreign political leaders.

2. College of Business Economics

(1) International Business (Postgraduate, Availability of Language for Instruction: Chinese)

Training goals

This major cultivates application-oriented talents who understand Chinese politics, economy, culture and society, with ability of Chinese communication, sense of social responsibility, ability of practice, innovative spirit and international vision. Upon mastering a sound international business knowledge system, being proficient in modern international business practice skills and international economic and trade laws, and having good foreign language skills and cross-cultural communication skills, students will be qualified to engage in international business practice and management in various international business enterprises and institutions, cross-border e-commerce enterprises or government departments. SBS has made every effort to build a high-end brand of MIB education.

Job orientations

The graduates are engaged in management, trade services and other related positions in government agencies and foreign trade companies, international freight forwarding companies, customs or inspection declarations, and various trade service-related enterprises and institutions, foreign enterprises, banks, insurance companies, securities companies, etc.

Specialty features

The SBS program unit for Master of International Business (MIB) officially approved and established in 2021 has a state-level first-class unit for undergraduate professional construction (International Economics and Trade and E-commerce), a Shanghai plateau discipline (Applied Economics for the Orientation of Business Economics), and various provincial-, ministry- and higher-level teaching and S&T research platforms (incl. a national experimental teaching demonstration center, a MOFCOM Training Base for International Business Officials, a decision-making consulting research base of the Shanghai Municipal Peoples Government, a humanities and social science research base for Shanghai universities, and a research base for international economic and trade rules and standards of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade). As the chairman unit of the Business Economics Committee of the Commerce Economy Association of China, talent training jointly with well-known enterprises such as Alibaba and Bailian Group, as well as in-depth integration of production and education with leading e-commerce platform companies such as Pinduoduo, Ctrip, and Fresh Hema have been carried out .

Upon actively integrating high-quality teaching and subject resources within and beyond SBS, the master program unit has built a strong teaching team, including 52 full-time teachers (55% with senior professional titles, 82% with a doctoral degree, and about 40% with overseas study background). The professional teachers have won the titles of the New CenturyExcellent Talent (Program) granted by the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Leading Talents, Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers, and the worlds top 2% scientists. The disciplinary team members have published high-level papers in top domestic and foreign journals such as International Journal of Production Research and Economic Research Journal, and have a number of decision consulting research results approved by domestic and foreign politicians. The members have obtained more than 50 scientific research projects above the provincial and ministerial level (such as the National Social Science Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Humanities and Social Sciences Project of the Ministry of Education), and won more than 10 provincial- and ministerial-level scientific research awards (such as the Shanghai Decision Consulting Research Achievement Award).
