On the afternoon of August 24th, the College of International Education organized an online salon event centering around the theme of practical Chinese language for travel. Through sharing and exchanges, the event introduced international students to practical Chinese that they will use when traveling in China.
Initiated from authentic scenarios, the salon activity presented international students with familiar Chinese signage found in public spaces like airports and high-speed railway stations, utilizing a blend of imagery and textual content. Furthermore, it introduced Chinese expressions for inquiring about personal flight and train details, thereby augmenting the students' familiarity with Chinese characters potentially encountered during their travels and enhancing their proficiency in basic Chinese conversations during their journeys. Navigational inquiries inevitably emerge during travel experiences. Through a simulated interactive approach, the salon provided international students with essential inquiries related to directions, along with the corresponding Chinese interpretations of responses, thereby fortifying their self-assurance in seeking assistance and resolving challenges throughout their journeys. Additionally, the event compiled an array of frequently used Chinese phrases for ordering meals, accompanied by phonetic annotations to facilitate the students' pronunciation and practice, ensuring their accurate utilization of Chinese for culinary preferences.
The successful execution of this salon event has heightened the international students' comprehension of Mandarin during their travels. As the saying goes, "Traveling a thousand miles is better than reading a thousand books." As vital emissaries fostering communication between China and the world, the international students, while learning professional knowledge, should also understand and enjoy the customs and local conditions of different parts of China, gain a comprehensive understanding of China, listen to the diverse voices within China, delve into the stories that shape China, and serve as a bridge of friendship between China and other nations.
