On the afternoon of September 12, 2023, International Education College of Shanghai Business School (SBS) took the lead to hold the Regular Meeting on Education of International Students for the New Semester in Conference Room 1501 of Xuhui Campus. The meeting presided over by Ms. Dai Ying, Vice Dean of the International Education College was attended by President Wu Zhong, the college deans in charge of international students-related work, the class advisors /counselors of international students and the relevant personnel of the International Education College.
First of all, Ms. Zhang Wen, Director of International Students Office, gave a briefing on the recent teaching and academic work related to international students in the new semester, activities of international students in the Summer Vacation, their return to university and enrollment of new international students. Next, she made a few reminders for the following work, including the management mode for international students in the new semester, renewal of international students-oriented management team, the arrival and entrance education of freshmen, courses in the new semester, arrangement of thesis guidance for the graduating class, and the internship and practice work.
College deans in charge of international student-related work put forward relevant opinions and suggestions in terms of faculty staffing, management methods of class tutors, and thesis standards for international students. After thorough discussion, Vice Dean Dai Ying briefly summarized the exchanges. Firstly, the new academic year will usher in new challenges such as the launch of the first master’s degree program for international students and the graduation of the first international students taught in English, so it is recommended that each international student cultivation unit shall systematically plan and promote the relevant work in a coordinated manner; secondly, in order to improve the management efficiency and guidance quality, each class tutor is recommended to be responsible for only 1-2 classes of international students; thirdly, the thesis standards for undergraduate international students should be managed with reference to the unified requirements of the Ministry of Education, the Municipal Education Commission and SBS, and a special workshop will be held to address the large gap in thesis supervisors for international students.
After the work exchange, President Wu Zhong made a concluding speech. On behalf of SBS, President Wu thanked the staff of International Education College and class advisors /counselors of the colleges for their hard work in the Summer Vacation, and put forward several constructive opinions on future work related to international students. He emphasized that the education of international students should be strengthened in terms of China’s national conditions and SBS’ conditions, and cultivate their all-round development in morality, intelligence, physicality, physical fitness and aesthetics, so that they can become an important force in spreading China’s friendly image and promoting the internationalization of SBS; International Education College and the other colleges should carry out work discussions regularly, and sort out and clarify their respective responsibilities in day-to-day management of international students, educational administration, and learning, etc.; and SBS should implement and detail the internationalization development goal of its 14th Five-Year Plan, practically realize the specific requirements on management team and connotation construction for international students, focus on the quality of education, strengthen the connotation of education, intensify the management and the construction of teaching staff in a convergent way, and create a beautiful name card of “International Students Studying in SBS”.
This meeting sorted out and discussed the recent work and problems related to international students, and actively prepared for and implemented the work in the new semester. International student education is an important part of the internationalization development strategy of SBS. Departments and colleges involved will show more enthusiasm in the new semester, carry forward the spirit of perseverance, do all the work in a practical and detailed way, further deepen the connotation of international education, and move forward to the goal of higher level internationalization.
