Visa and Residence Permit Application Procedures for International Students

 I How to apply for a Chinese visa after obtaining the Admission Notice of Shanghai Business School (hereinafter referred to as the “Admission Notice”) and the Visa Application of International students for Study in China (hereinafter referred to as the “JW202/201 Form”)?

After obtaining the Admission Notice and the JW202/201 Form, you may apply for a student visa from a Chinese embassy or consulate in your country. The embassy or consulate will issue a corresponding Chinese visa to you based on your Admission Notice and JW202/201 Form. In case you have any doubt, please consult the local embassy or consulate. Please prepare the following materials for the application (subject to the specific requirements of the local embassy or consulate):

1) Original passport;

2) Admission Notice (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

3) JW202/201 Form (issued by the College of International Education of SBS).

II How to apply for visa and residence permit after registration at SBS?

(I) After arriving at SBS, please first handle registration, payment, and other formalities at the College of International Education;

(II) After officially becoming a registered student of SBS (having handled registration, payment, and other formalities), you may receive the applications for visa and residence permit from the College of International Education;

(III) Apply for a visa from the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau with related materials.

1 How does a student intending to study at SBS for more than six months apply for visa or residence permit?

(1) If you intend to study at SBS for more than six months and you have obtained a residence permit or the residence permit has not expired for more than three months (and you have received physical examination in China), please prepare the following materials:

① Original passport;

② Admission Notice (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

③ Temporary Residence Registration Certificate (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

④ One passport photo;

⑤ Proof of funds (which is to be prepared by the international student, and may be required upon visa application).

(2) If you intend to study at SBS for more than six months and you currently hold a non-resident visa or your residence permit has expired for more than three months, you will need to get a study residence permit and prepare the following materials:

① Original passport;

② Admission Notice (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

③ Temporary Residence Registration Certificate (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

④ One passport photo;

⑤ Certificate of Verification of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (issued by the Hygiene and Health Center for International Travel, Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (No.15 Jinbang Road, Shanghai). If you have already a foreign certificate of physical examination, please bring it along upon physical examination). The specific operation procedures are as follows:

6) Proof of funds (which is to be prepared by the international student, and may be required upon visa application).

 

2 How does a student intending to study at SBS for no more than six months (inclusive) apply for visa or residence permit?

(1) If you intend to study at SBS for no more than six months (inclusive) and hold an X2 visa, you may apply for extension of X2 visa (with total residence time controlled to six months at the maximum) or increase of the number of entries once. Please prepare the following materials:

① Original passport;

② Admission Notice (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

③ Temporary Residence Registration Certificate (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

④ One passport photo;

⑤ Proof of funds (which is to be prepared by the international student, and may be required upon visa application).

(2) If you intend to study at SBS for no more than six months (inclusive) and hold a visa other than X2, you may apply for issue of a short-term X2 visa (no more than six months) instead from the College of International Education. Please prepare the following materials:

① Original passport;

② Admission Notice (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

③ Temporary Residence Registration Certificate (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

④ One passport photo;

⑤ Proof of funds (which is to be prepared by the international student, and may be required upon visa application).

 

III What if my visa is about to expire during the study period?

If your visa is about to expire during the study period, please first apply for extension of length of schooling at least 30 days before expiry of visa, and then apply for extension of visa, from the College of International Education. Please prepare the following materials:

1. Original passport;

2. Tuition payment voucher;

3. Temporary Residence Registration Certificate (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

4. One passport photo.

 

IV What if I want suspension (discontinuance) of schooling?

To suspend (discontinue) schooling during the study period, you need to change residence permit into residence visa. First you apply for suspension (discontinuance) of schooling, and then, with approval, you apply for change of visa, from the College of International Education. Please prepare the following materials:

1) Original passport;

 2) Temporary Residence Registration Certificate (issued by the College of International Education of SBS);

 3) One passport photo.

Friendly reminder: Change of visa requires at least ten working days in advance, so please properly make your schedule to avoid unnecessary losses.

 

V How does off-campus internship work during the study period?

If you intend to take an off-campus internship during the study period, you need to apply for off-campus internship and obtain the Internship Visa Application from the College of International Education. Please prepare the following materials:

1. Valid original passport with residence permit (students without residence permit should prepare related materials according to Article 2);

2. Internship Visa Application.

 

VI How to help a family member apply for a residence permit for private affairs?

SBS only helps family members with visa apply for a residence permit for private affairs, and the deadline of the residence permit for private affairs may not exceed the deadline of the residence permit held by the international student. In the case of visa-free entry, a residence permit for private affairs can not be applied. To apply, please prepare the following materials:

1. Temporary Residence Registration Certificate of the family members;

2. Passport photos of the student and the family members;

3. Original and copy of proof of family relationship (a proof of family relationship issued by a foreign agency must be certified by a Chinese embassy or consulate in the home country of the student, and be translated by a domestic translation agency when necessary);

4. Certificate of Verification of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner (issued by the Hygiene and Health Center for International Travel, Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (No.15 Jinbang Road, Shanghai). If you have already a foreign certificate of physical examination, please bring the original along upon physical examination).

5. One passport photo of a family member;

6. Annual full tuition payment voucher.

 

VII What if your visa expires during the study period?

1. If your visa expires during the study period, first you need to receive penalty and a Written Decision of Administrative Penalty from the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau;

 2. Then you receive the Application for Visa from the College of International Education.

 

VIII What if my passport is about to expire during the study period?

1 If your passport is about to expire during the study period, you need to apply for a new passport at least three months in advance from the consulate of your country in Shanghai. Considering that it takes a long time to apply for a new passport in some cases, please reserve sufficient time for application. For details, please consult the consulate of your country in Shanghai.

2 After obtaining the new passport, please register at the College of International Education, and receive the Application for Visa.

 

IX What if I have lost my passport in China?

 1 First you need to report the incident to the local police station with your valid ID certificate, and receive a certificate of loss report of passport.

2 Then you bring the certificate of loss report of passport issued by the local police station to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau for issue of the Certificate of Loss of Passport;

3. Next, you apply for a new passport from an embassy or a consulate of your country in China with the Certificate of Loss of Passport;

4. After receiving the new passport, you must first register at the College of International Education within ten days, and then apply for reissue of visa or residence permit from the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau.
