A severe 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28th, resulting in significant devastation. Until now, over 1,700 fatalities were reported, 3400 have been injured, and approximately 300 are remain missing. After the disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang sent messages of condolence to Myanmar's leader Min Aung Hlaing on March 29th, expressing the deep sympathy of the Chinese government and people for the people of Myanmar. On the same day, the China International Development Cooperation Agency announced that the Chinese government had decided to provide RMB 100 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Myanmar and swiftly dispatched two rescue teams to support disaster relief efforts.
Deeply concerned by the disaster, Shanghai Business School (SBS) swiftly activated its emergency contact mechanism, immediately contacting 126 Myanmar trainees who had previously participated in our overseas aid training programs to express our concern for them and their families. By March 31st, trainees had reported that their families were safe and sound, expressing their gratitude for the univerty's timely care. Ms. Nyein Nway Thi, a staff member of Myanmar's Ministry of Commerce and alumna of the 2024 RCEP Trade Promotion Seminar, emphasized, "Numerous buildings were destroyed, and lives were lost. During this difficult time, receiving your concern deeply moved us."
The earthquake was merciless, but humanity showed its love. Overseas aid training has built not only a bridge of knowledge but also a profound bond of human affection. SBS alumni are the school's most precious lifeline. SBS will continue to uphold its mission of "people-to-people connectivity", maintaining close communication with alumni from various countries through a regular post-training contact mechanism, providing assistance to the best of our ability, and supporting the people of disaster-stricken Myanmar in overcoming the disaster and rebuilding their homes.
