In order to continuously promote the quality of the construction of our exemplary English-taught courses for international students, the College of International Education organized an online meeting of the 2022 Shanghai Business School exemplary English-taught courses for international students construction project and a training session on the same topic on the afternoon of June 2. Chen Wei and Dai Ying, Vice Deans of our College, 8 course leaders from the College of Finance and Finance, the College of Hotel Management, the College of Business Administration and the College of Business and Economics, and relevant personnel attended this meeting. Professor Zeng Fenyu, director of the Department of International Exchange and Cooperation of Shanghai Electric University, gave a lecture for this course construction training as an invited expert. The meeting was presided over by Vice Dean Dai Ying.
Professor Zeng Fenyu gave training for the participants, analyzing the influencing factors and the construction path of the exemplary English course for international students in four aspects, including the characteristics of international students, the main problems, how to do a good job of the course construction and its development direction. According to the characteristics of international students different from Chinese students, Prof. Zeng reminded four aspects that need to be paid attention, including: adjusting teaching methods and targeting teaching; focusing on improving teaching ability; strengthening communication and interaction between teachers and students to improve teaching effectiveness; and improving the school's policy incentives for international courses. He prompted six requirements for the evaluation of model courses and gave a detailed introduction to the Notice of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission on the Selection of Model Courses for Teaching English to International Students in Shanghai Universities in 2021. Combining with the evaluation requirements, Prof. Zeng also gave four suggestions on how to do a good job of course construction: firstly, to solve the teaching team problem; secondly, to pay attention to the key elements; thirdly, to enrich the teaching methods; and fourthly, to pay attention to the teaching effect. The development direction of curriculum construction should pay more attention to the construction of brand specialty, the construction of quality assurance system, the actual effect, the grid construction, the data feedback, the experience promotion and the international cooperation.
In the interactive communication session, the person in charge of each course construction fully exchanged opinions with Prof. Zeng on website construction, video recording, process recording materials, selection of ideological and political materials, the interaction between teachers and students, etc. In addition, teachers of our College communicated with Prof. Zeng on the supervision of international student education, international postgraduate enrollment and participation in international student discipline competitions, and Prof. Zeng gave detailed answers to the questions and provided the teachers with referenceable opinions.
In the end, Vice Dean Chen Wei summarized the meeting and pointed out that the leaders of each course construction have made great contributions to the continuous promotion of high-quality and connotative development of international students in China. The university has also given policy support and will strive for more resources to promote course construction in the future. At the same time, he put forward three suggestions: firstly, using the concept of high-quality development to guide the connotation construction of international education. Focusing on the improvement of connotation, course construction is an important link. The course is the core linking teachers, students and training units, and is the key to improving teaching quality. The university attaches great importance to it and the follow-up support will continue to increase; secondly, during the construction process, it is necessary to focus on the thinking of the concept and promote the work under the guidance of the OBE education concept. It is necessary to pay attention to the connection between talent training objectives and social needs, scientifically locate the role in this major, and then carry out the construction of teams, content, methods, and security systems in sequence; thirdly, during the process, we should pay attention to the promotion at all levels. It is necessary to sort out the goals and tasks, methods and means, division of responsibilities, etc., and form a systematic implementation plan. According to the set goals, systematically set time nodes, team division of labor, and presentation of staged tasks and results form. The goals need to be aligned with the construction standards of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission's English-taught Course for International Students. In addition, funding management is also an important factor. The funds should be used in the key places for the overall development and the effective improvement of the teaching quality.
The successful holding of this meeting not only promoted the construction of our exemplary English-taught courses for international students, but also continuously promoted the high-quality and connotative development of international students, and laid the foundation for the implementation of the university's international talent training.
